Forty years of redirecting young lives on Oʻahu.
We work with youth others have written off, helping them step away from gangs and violence and toward school, work, and family.
Serving Oʻahu youth ages 11 to 24 who are referred by schools, families, and the community. Services are free.
Celebrating 40 years of youth
Join us for AFY's 40th Anniversary Celebration of Youth. Date and venue to be confirmed by AFY.
What redirection looks like
AFY's Redirectional Therapy builds a lasting relationship with each young person, then works across six parts of their life.
Education
Staying in school and moving toward graduation.
Employment and careers
First jobs, job skills, and a picture of the future.
Recreation and sports
Healthy ways to spend time with peers.
Culture
Connection to identity, place, and community.
Community service
Giving back to the neighborhoods they live in.
Social activities
Safe spaces to just be kids.
Ways to give
Give online

Behind the demo
How this site would be run, updated, and kept safe by a small staff, at almost no monthly cost.
What's real and what's simulated
Real in this demo
- AFY's mission, programs, contact details, and giving options, taken from public sources
- Mobile layout, keyboard navigation, screen-reader labels, and light and dark modes
- The Hawaiian spelling checker
- Hosting on a static page, the same model Cloudflare Pages uses
Simulated for now
- The site assistant follows a script; the real one would be Claude connected to the site editor
- Donation form, sponsor sign-in, and Google sign-in show sample screens only
- Event dates, sponsor data, and photos are placeholders for AFY to supply
How it fits together
Staff change content by talking to an assistant or using a simple editor. Code changes go through a technical reviewer. Money and donor records stay with a dedicated donation platform.
Site architecture diagram
Staff describe a change to the site assistant, which uses a site connector to create a draft in the content editor. Staff publish, and the public website on Cloudflare Pages updates. Design and code changes go from the technical lead using Claude Code to GitHub for review, then deploy to the website. The donation platform is embedded in the site and holds gifts, receipts, and the sponsor portal. Google Workspace handles staff sign-in.
| Piece | Tool | Expected cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website hosting | Cloudflare Pages | $0 | Free tier allows organizational use |
| Content editor | Sanity | $0 | Confirm free-tier limits before launch |
| Donations and sponsor portal | Givebutter (proposed) | $0 core | Funded by optional donor tips; AFY currently uses Network for Good and PayPal |
| Staff email and sign-in | Google Workspace for Nonprofits | $0 | If AFY qualifies |
| Domain name | afyhawaii.com | About $15–25 a year | Move to an AFY-owned registrar account |
| Site assistant | Claude | Depends on plan | Check nonprofit pricing |
Try the site assistant
Staff describe what they want in plain words. The assistant fills in a draft, fixes Hawaiian spelling, checks photo permissions, and writes a social post. A person always clicks Publish.
The assistant can only create and edit content inside approved page blocks. It can't change the design or code, so it can't break the site.
This demo follows a script. Try a suggestion, or type your own request that names an event and a date.
Accessibility
The goal is WCAG 2.2 level AA, built in from the start rather than fixed later.
Built into this demo
- Skip link, clear page landmarks, and one main heading per page
- Visible keyboard focus on every link, button, and field
- Text and button colors that meet AA contrast in light and dark modes
- Text size control in the footer, and layouts that hold up at 200% zoom
- Animation turns off for people who set "reduce motion"
- Form fields with labels, and live announcements for status messages
- Hawaiian words marked with
lang="haw"where it helps screen readers
Ongoing habits for staff
- Every image gets alt text; the editor won't publish without it
- Flyers are posted as text, not just an image of a flyer
- Videos get captions; YouTube's auto-captions get a quick review
- Link text says where it goes, never "click here"
- An automated check runs on every deploy, plus a yearly manual review
Hawaiian spelling
The ʻokina and kahakō change meaning and pronunciation, so the site treats them as required, not decorative.
Both fonts (Noto Serif Display and Noto Sans) include every Hawaiian character, so nothing falls back to a mismatched font.
Rules the site follows
- The ʻokina is the real character (ʻ, U+02BB), never an apostrophe or curly quote
- Kahakō use precomposed letters (ā, not a + macron)
- The editor flags common place names and words that are missing marks
- Official names stay as registered, like "AFY Hawaii" on existing accounts; the checker skips those

Succession plan
The site should never depend on one person. Every account belongs to AFY, has two admins, and is listed in a one-page runbook kept in the shared drive.
| Account | Owned by | Backup admin | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domain registrar (afyhawaii.com) | AFY admin email | Board treasurer | Auto-renew on; move off Wix if needed |
| Google Workspace | AFY super admin | Second super admin | Two-step sign-in with security keys |
| Cloudflare | AFY admin email | Technical volunteer | Hosting and DNS |
| Sanity editor | AFY admin email | Communications lead | Staff sign in with Google |
| GitHub | AFY organization | Technical volunteer | Code is never in a personal account |
| Donation platform | AFY finance lead | CEO | Donor records export monthly |
| Password vault | AFY organization | Board member | Holds recovery codes for all of the above |
Runbook covers
- How to publish, unpublish, and roll back a change
- Who to call, in order, if the site is down
- Where backups and donor exports live
- How to hand off the technical lead role
Recurring checks
- Quarterly: review who has access; remove departed staff
- Quarterly: test restoring the site from GitHub
- Yearly: accessibility review and domain renewal check
Questions for AFY staff
- Higher-resolution logo (SVG or EPS), and whether the logo green and light blue are official brand colors
- Current donation tools: contracts with Network for Good and PayPal, and whether donor history can be exported
- Is AFY on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 today?
- Who registered afyhawaii.com, and who can sign in to it?
- Who approves posts before they go live?
- How media releases for youth are collected and stored
- What sponsors ask for most: receipts, impact reports, event recognition
- Date, venue, and details for the 40th anniversary celebration
- Current newsletter tool and mailing list
